The Leicester Falcons today finally see notification that their two year campaign to become a full member of the BAFL has been successful, and they will line up for the 2008 season. After an unsuccessful attempt last year the club work tremendously hard in the off season to build on the strong base they had built up from 2006.

Guy Kersey General Manager said “Following the disappointment of missing out last year I must admit I had my doubts about whether to mount another attempt, however I was quickly persuaded by the heart of this team, its dedicated players and coaches. Since that meeting in December last year we worked hard to improve on areas we were lacking in 2006. We recruited a great team of backroom staff as well as good coaches and added significantly to our squad with rookie talent and experienced campaigners.”

He added, “I would also like to recognise the efforts of the management team of the Falcons Danny Gaunt, Kate Grimbly, Andy Perry, Steve Stafford, Andy Hill, Charles Dagnall, Albert Thompson Gil Surepi and Michael Simpson. And of course the players.”

Associate members are only required to play 2 exhibition games to prove themselves but the Falcons took the unusual step of playing 6 competitive matches against a wide range of opposition, including current Division 1 and 2 teams as well as fellow expansion teams. These teams were. East Midlands Saxons, Lancashire Wolverines Chester Romans, Lincolnshire Bombers, Tamworth Phoenix and Bedford Blue Raiders, Ending up with a 2-3-1 record.

We wanted to give the squad a much more realistic experience of what it would be like stepping up to Division 2 which is way we played much more games than we needed to, So come 2008 they are not shocked. It was also important to give a squad of rookies as much game time experience as possible, and to repay them for their dedication over two years of training.

The Falcons start their preparation for 2008 this weekend the 25th with their open practice sessions. We also want to recruit coaches, game day staff, support staff, and of course sponsors. Information can be found at www.leicesterfalcons.co.uk or emailing Guy at info@leicesterfalcons.co.uk
